Digital Inking Movie Tutorial

Posted by Einar in Corel Painter, Tutorial, Drawing, Sketching, Comic Strips, Digital Art, Cartoons, Movies, Art, Comics (March 24, 2008 at 9:07 am)

Sometime ago I downloaded a bundle of software from macheist.com, which included a neat little app called Snapz Pro X. With that I can video-capture my screen while I draw, so I decided to give that a go.

This is a little sketch that I penciled, lettered and inked digitally in Corel Painter X on my Wacom Cintiq 21UX. Very simple, but it shows the process.

Anatomy of a Panel

This is my work process, shown with a panel from the graphic novel I’m working on. It shows the sketch, the lettering and then how I start coloring by adding a gray tone over everything, before blocking in the colors and then, in the last two panels, I show how I add light and texture to finish it off.

It’s all done in Corel Painter using a Wacom Cintiq 21UX graphics tablet (as usual).

The Chase Sketch Book drawing inked inking faber castell pitt

I have no idea who these cartoon people are or where they came from, they just sort of appeared in my sketch book this evening…

As usual, the sketch is done using the Faber-Castell PITT brush pen and just inked straight with no pencil drawing underneath.

Washington Post Cuts and Shrinks Comics

Posted by Einar in Comic Strips, Comics (December 4, 2007 at 3:17 pm)

It rough out there… Awhile back, the Houston Chronicle drastically cut down their comics section. According to Editor & Publisher, and the ComicsDC blog, it’s now the Washington Post’s turn to drop comics. And not only that, in order to cut down from two to one page of Sunday comics, they’re apparently shrinking the remaining offerings to fit them in.

In other news, subscribers will now be supplied with magnifying glasses for easy comics reading…

Redesigning Book Character

Posted by Einar in Drawing, Sketching, Children's Books, Art, Comics, Illustrations (December 2, 2007 at 10:09 pm)

Redesigning Characters sketches evolvedRedesign Character book painting

As I was working on my current book, I realized that the look of one of the characters wasn’t working. This isn’t uncommon, but it is still unfortunate, since quite a few changes have to be made.

So I spent some time working on it, and the character slowly evolved into something I felt worked better.

You can see the old character design on the left and the new character design on the right. Fortunately, I hadn’t started painting this character, but I still have to go through and change her looks in all the sketches.

Frank Miller Does “The Spirit”

Posted by Einar in Art, Film, Movies, Comics (November 16, 2007 at 1:05 pm)

The Spirit The Spirit Movie Directed Frank MillerI’m filled with fear.

One of the best comic book characters ever created by arguably the best cartoonist ever to walk the earth is being turned into a big-budget live action green screen movie extravaganza.

In this interview from MTV, Frank Miller talks about how he’s bringing The Spirit, by the genius Will Eisner, to the screen.

I’m a little perturbed by the preliminary movie poster, to say the least. That’s clearly a Frank Miller interpretation of The Spirit and bares little or no resemblance to the actual character created by Eisner.

Let’s hope I’m wrong, but I’m a bit worried about this movie…

Interview with Patrick McDonnell (”Mutts”)

Posted by Einar in Comic Strips, Books, Art, Comics (November 13, 2007 at 9:19 pm)
Patrick Mcdonnell Interview mutts comic stripPatrick McDonnell is one of the most skillful cartoonists around. Both his art and writing are heads and shoulders above almost anything out there. He’s one of those rare people who I’d dare group in with the likes of Charles Schulz, George Herriman and Walt Kelly. He’s just that good, and “Mutts” is just an excellent comic strip.

And now his third children’s book about Earl and Mooch is out.

Here’s recent interview with McDonnell from the Cincinnati Enquirer.
