Let’s face it, most of us will never make it onto The Simpsons as a character on the actual show, so we might have to take matters into our own hands…
I created a quick self portrait this morning of what I, myself, might look like as a Simpson character. |

I do most of my work digitally these days, although I do a lot of sketch work on paper. Today, I pulled out the old Windsor & Newton watercolor paints, my Arches watercolor paper and my Raphaël Series 8404 (no. 2) watercolor brush.
And I did the two sketches you see above. However, they look a lot better on paper than they do scanned into my computer, let me just say that.
I’ve never really used watercolors, since I’ve mostly enjoyed working with acrylics in the past. So this was a bit new for me. The one on the left was done first before I figured out that, unlike with inking, I needed to do the outlines last.
So for the second sketch, I painted in light colors first (this is also opposite of how I would use acrylics, where I always paint from dark to light), then added the outlines before I went back and darkened some of the shadow areas on the character.
Anyway, it was a fun little test and I’ll definitely do more of it. I’m also going to try to find a way to simulate this technique on the computer, using Painter.

I have no idea who these cartoon people are or where they came from, they just sort of appeared in my sketch book this evening…
As usual, the sketch is done using the Faber-Castell PITT brush pen and just inked straight with no pencil drawing underneath.
