“King and King” Children’s Book Offends

Posted by Einar in Children's Books, Politics, Books (November 30, 2007 at 9:54 pm)

King And King Book About HomosexualityI came across this gem of an article from The Morning Call of Allentown, Pennsylvania this morning.

It centers around two outraged parents complaining about a book called King and King (originally in Dutch) by Linda De Haan and Stern Nijland. There’s a horrifying twist at the end of this book. The prince marries the… prince! And they kiss! It’s a good thing the offended mother handled the surprise nicely, though. Quote:

I was sick.

Oh… Nevermind… It goes on:

”I just want kids to enjoy their innocence and their time of growing up,” Jeff Issa said, explaining his persistence. ”Let them be kids … and not worry about homosexuality, race, religion. Just let them live freely as kids.”

Is it even possible to get more misguided?

Two people who are in love and who kiss each other on their wedding day makes you sick…?

Something tells me their kids would handle this book a lot better than they did themselves, but the sad thing is, because the parents have these dangerous notions, their kids are going to grow up feeling the same way, instead of becoming tolerant, accepting and enlightened human beings.

Fortunately, the library is not budging:

Kathee Rhode, the library’s director, said censoring books based on subject matter is the duty of parents, not the library. She said the library strives to provide material representing a spectrum of views and ways of life.

I should say so!

Oh, well, let’s forget about all of this nonsense and move to Oklahoma instead!

Lawmakers in Oklahoma voted last year to withhold state funding from public libraries that don’t place books containing homosexual themes in a separate section in response to complaints about ”King & King” and other books.

Uh… Maybe not.

The Commonwealth of TV Obsession

Posted by Einar in Off-Topic (November 27, 2007 at 9:00 pm)

When we moved from California to Virgina last year, we particularly noticed two things that were different. 1) Nobody, and I mean nobody, in Virginia knows how to merge onto the freeway, or whatever they call them here, and 2) they have to watch TV all the time, everywhere.

They can’t live without it, apparently. We go to the local Rec Center and it’s blasting in the lobby on a gi-normous screen. You can’t sit down and relax without hearing Greta Van Susteren’s ear-shattering voice. You go upstairs to work out and there’s 7 (that’s seven) TVs in a row in front of your stationary bike.

You might decide to go to the post office to mail a letter and they’re blasting CNN. Head on over to the bank and there you have to watch (or at least listen to) Fox News again, while doing that balance transfer.

That’s why (and I’m going to sound like a commercial here) I love Tivo. It tapes stuff by itself, and then you sit down and watch it when you feel like it. Personally, I prefer to choose for myself when I want to watch TV and what exactly I want to watch.

But perhaps that’s just me…

I really, really don’t want to watch Lou Dobbs at the DMV! (Or anywhere else, for that matter. Yeesh!)
